Get Away Weekend To Santa Cruz – Capitola

Spring time at the beach has to be one of the best times. I was in San Jose visiting my father and decided to make a weekend of it and go to the beach which is 30 minutes away.  When I left San Jose it was raining and I thought just my luck,  when I arrived at the beach it was sunny.  Ollie and I spent two nights at the beach and stayed at the Sunny Cove Motel. I knew the accommodations would not be the nicest but the price and location was right and they accepted dogs. The Motel is located on East Cliff between Santa Cruz and Capitola. Capitola is not a dog friendly town and I did not want to be near the busy Santa Cruz boardwalk. The motel directly in front which looked quite nice from my deck is twice the price.

We spent most of our time just walking on the beach. It was a wonderful weekend and I think I will do more of it. See the pictures and map below.

Places to eat shop and visit. The shopping bags are yarn stores.

Pet Friendly Lodging in Santa Cruz California

I like to travel with my dog therefore I am on the never ending search for accommodations that allow dogs. This really limits the possibilities and I am not one to sneak him in. I have created a map of Pet Friendly Hotels, Motels and Lodging in the Santa Cruz, California area. It includes addresses and contact information. I have also included what I understand are pet friendly restaurants. My preference was to stay in Capitola, CA when I called the Venetian Hotel, which is right on the beach, they informed me I would not find lodging in Capitola that accepts pets. How unfriendly is that?  If you know of more places in the area or can comment on any of the locations on my map it would be appreciated.

Two Free Sunday Events In Marin County

It is Sunday morning and the first thing I do is choose my favorite sections of the newspaper. To be honest with you the real first thing I do is make a Latte. I am talking “old media” newspaper that someone throws in your drive way, you retrieve first thing in the morning wearing your robe and slippers, as you let the dog out. One day this will be a lost art. Latte in hand, I sit at the kitchen table the newspaper in front of and laptop off to the side. This way I don’t miss a beat since I have found that many of the articles in the paper now refer to websites and I can look them up or do research as I read.

Some weekends I crave a quick “free” inspirational getaway, since I am at home all week.  Most of the time it is an “It’s You and Me” event, meaning Ollie the dog is my companion. Last weekend I was lucky there were two great on-going events that allowed dogs you should know about. Both are in Marin County, which made me happy that I did not have to travel far or cross a bridge.

First event, I am not a Shakespeare buff, but I do enjoy the theatre, Shakespeare in Old Mill Park. This is the  Curtain Theatre Company’s 11th. season and this year they are presenting “As You Like It”.   I brought Ollie and we stayed for the first half which is  1.5 hours, then there is a 10 minute intermission and the second half is 1 hour. I will go back and see the second half,  I did not think Ollie would make it through another hour.  What a lovely escape sitting under the redwoods watching Shakespeare with your dog sitting next to you. The plays starts at 2:00, there is live music (a trio) and the costumes, set and acting were all wonderful. The production is Free and continues every weekend, Labor Day Monday through September 19.  Below are photos I took of the production with my trusty phone:

Some historical background information about The Curtain Theatre Company from the program:

“The Curtain Theate is named after one of London’s first public theatres. Built near the Curtain Close in  Shoreditch, it was described in Shakespeare’s Henry V as the “wooden O”.  The Curtain was home to Shakespeare’s company, the Lord Chamberlain’s Men, until they constructed the Globe in 1599. Like our own Curtain Theatre, the 1577 original featured an open-air stage and conspicuous absence of curtains.”

The production is in the amphitheatre behind the library in Old Mill Park which is quite intimate.  If you’re determined to really watch and listen to the play word for word, I suggest sitting in the chairs nearest to the stage. The back rows are where the families sit and can also be transient with people coming and going. It is a free outdoor venue, in a local park and people tend to meander in and then meander out, it is all apart of the loose ambiance. Don’t forget to bring an extra sweater or jacket it can get chilly under the redwoods.

The last picture in the Gallery above is at the Corte Madera Town Center. After we left the play we stopped at the TC where there is free live music on Sunday afternoons. People were tapping their feet and dancing. Ollie was ready to go home, I guess he had enough. Sometimes he is not the best partner. I don’t know how long the concerts at the Town Center will continue.

How do you spend your weekend afternoons when you need to get away but don’t want to go far or spend a lot of money?

Wandering In The Castro District Around Mission San Francisco

The Great Needles & Pens It was Saturday morning and the sky was gray it would have been easy to stay in bed since I had no pressing appointments for the day, and Ollie was lying next to me. He was just groomed the day before and his fur was soft and he smelled really good. Whether I have plans for the day or not I hate to waste the morning in bed, even though it is tempting. Once downstairs I make my Latte and then sit down at the computer. I did not have much time to surf, I wanted to make the 8:15 Yoga Class at the gym. Then for some reason an RSS feed from my Google homepage grabbed me right away and set my day in a positive motion,” Free Life Center “.  I thought, isn’t that what we all want, and on a Saturday it could be my reality. After Yoga it became an “It’s You and Me Day”, except I don’t think the “you”, Ollie dog, was thrilled about this adventure.

With the Free Life Center and a knitting store in mind I set out to visit this friendly neighborhood in a small part of San Francisco known as the Castro. Once we arrived and found the destination  I chose to park on Dolores St. that is in the middle of my two points of interest, the same block as Mission San Francisco and the added bonus of free parking, no meters.

This is how our day unfolded.

  1. First stop Needles & Pens. I had never heard of this store before today and I am glad I found it, to quote the website

“the space aims to provide an affordable place where like minded people from the community can display and sell their own home-made goods, home-published zines, and art work. The items we stock are predominately recycled, silk screened, cut-up, re-sewn, photocopied, hand-made, and hand-published.”

Along with the retail store there is a gallery with rotating exhibits and the current art installation through the end of August is the Free Life Center, a house created by two Portland-based artists embarking on a dream. The store and the art installation appear to be  like minded individuals living out their dream fantasies. More power to them and I know I will be going back to see more exhibits.

  2. Next stop the dog shop, as we make our way back down Dolores Street and turning right on to 18th St. we pass Dolores Park on our left. Ollie does not care about playing with other dogs so we proceed on, to discover Jeffrey’s Natural Pet Foods. For some reason Ollie is very nervous and has been pulling me with his tail between his legs the entire time. I am not sure why. I think the gourmet dog store may help, but it doesn’t phase him. I purchase some “Papa “Pooch” inelli pork jerky” which if Ollie were a real dog would have devoured; but he would not eat anything until he was in the safety of the car.
  3. Second planned destination is ImagiKnit a “Local Yarn Store” (LYS), sadly there are not many of these around anymore. What a treasure to discover this store, they have an inventory to drool over, even if you don’t knit. Personally, I have more yarn than I have time, and since they don’t allow dogs in the store I was not able to spend much time. They let me carry Ollie as I took a quick look. I know I will be back, since yarn has become an addiction.

My main goals for the day have now been met and we continue to wander. I think wandering is a true luxury. My husband hates to wander.

  4. Leaving ImagiKnit and crossing the street is Urban Bread. It is now after 1:00 and I am beginning to get hungry, even if Ollie is not. Urban Bread is a bakery, coffee shop, lunch spot. They have a factory in South San Francisco that delivers the bread and pastry fresh daily. I had one of the best Quiches for lunch I tasted in a long time, the crust was light and flaky not to mention the fresh ingredients. Reflecting back, I did not pass one chain or fast food restaurant during my 2-3 block walk.
  5. Across the street from Urban Bread is the  Samovar Tea Lounge. For background, I am a tea lover and have a favorite tea shop in China Town I frequent. Of course I am interested and peak in the door of the Samovar Tea Lounge; the food and atmosphere looked inviting. They  have another location at Yerba Buena Center.
  6. Now it is time to make our way back to the car, which if Ollie had his way we would run, but to his dismay I make him slow down. As we walk along Sanchez St. we arrive at 16th St. and happen upon a line-up of people waiting to get their last sandwich at Ike’s Place. They are losing their lease and have to be out by the end of this month. Supposedly people are waiting in line for two hours to get in before they close their doors. It appeared to be a friendly crowd and may have been “a social” thing to do. See my pictures below. Rumor has it they are looking for a new location.

I created the Google Map below with markers for points of interest. I parked on the street at Dolores and 17th. If you make this trip be sure to come back and leave a comment.
